The Truth About Ultrasonic Pest Repellers: Do They Really Work?

Are you having a busy day? If so, let’s cut to the chase. Ultrasonic pest repellers don’t work. We wish driving away pests was as easy as purchasing a cheap device from Amazon, but the reality is that getting rid of rodents and bugs takes a lot more effort.

In this post, we’ll explain how ultrasonic pest repellers are meant to work, and why they’re wholly ineffective.

How Does Ultrasonic Pest Repeller Work?

So here is how ultrasonic pest repellers are said to work: You plug them into the wall and they immediately start emitting ultrasonic vibrations at multiple frequencies.

The vibrations are basically a noise that humans can’t register, but rodents and bugs cannot stand. Most devices don’t have an on/off switch, so the moment you plug them in, they begin to work.

Companies claim that these ultrasonic repellers drive away pests with the sound, but that the noise doesn’t bug humans or pets. However, many brands don’t disclose the frequencies that their devices emit, so it’s impossible to confirm whether that’s true or not.

Are Ultrasonic Pest Repellers Effective?

Ultrasonic pest repellers are not particularly effective, and certainly not for long. Independent research has shown their lack of efficacy when it comes to ants, cockroaches, bedbugs, rats, mice, and other creatures.

Rodents, in particular, may show initial aversion to the sound, but they get over it very quickly – they’re more than happy to tolerate it for the sake of shelter and food. You can find a lot of photos and videos showing rats and mice happily standing around right next to the ultrasonic devices.

This lack of efficacy led the FTC to issue warnings to many ultrasonic repellent manufacturers, and in 2018, lead to a class action lawsuit against one manufacturer which ended in a settlement with the claimants getting their money back.

Where To Place an Ultrasonic Pest Repeller

So you already have an ultrasonic repeller, and you want to give it a try anyway. That’s okay! These devices are often cheap, and they’re largely not harmful (although watch out for headaches or signs of discomfort in your pets).

So where to place the ultrasonic pest repeller? Put it in the areas where infestations have been a problem, like the kitchen, basement, or attic. The radiofrequency doesn’t travel well through thick walls, but it emits better in an empty space. You’re pretty restricted to areas where you have wall plugs, but do try to clear away furniture or boxes that may suppress the sound.

How Long Does an Ultrasonic Pest Repeller Last?

This largely depends on the device you purchase, but you can generally expect an ultrasonic pest repeller to last for a few years. Most sources suggest three to five years. As for actual pest repelling, however, that will only last for a week or two, if you notice any results at all.

What is the Most Effective Ultrasonic Pest Repeller?

We don’t believe that an effective ultrasonic pest repeller exists.

This makes you wonder – how come these products have so many excellent reviews? We actually went through Amazon’s top-rated ultrasonic repeller listings and ran them through Fakespot’s analyzer tool.

The result? As it turns out, many of the high ratings are rated as highly suspicious, and when they’re filtered out, these products have a much lower rating.

Actually Effective Alternatives

Suffice it to say, we think there are many pest repeller alternatives that are much much better than ultrasonic devices. The best of all? Actual, tried-and-tested pest prevention habits. They take a bit of effort to implement, but as is often the case in life, the more effort you put in, the better the results.

Here are our expert pest prevention tips:

  • Keep things clean: Dirty dishes and piles of clutter are all highly attractive to pest animals, whether as food sources or hiding places. Getting in the habit of tidying up and keeping your home, garage, and yard clean will go a long way toward preventing infestations.
  • Fix entryways: Another sure way of keeping critters away is by making sure they don’t have a way of getting inside your home. Inside your home, that means covering vents with screens and sealing any holes in the foundation. You also want to consider weak points in your attic and basement.
  • Deal with leaks: Water is a must for any living creature, so leaks are actually something that often attracts pests. Make sure you don’t have any leaking pipes in your house or yard and check for ceiling damage that leads to leaks in your attic.
  • Keep food sealed: Finally, make sure that the food in your house is totally inaccessible to small pest animals. Use Tupperware or jars instead of bags to store pantry staples, keep your garbage cans sealed, and even consider how you’re storing pet food.

At Green Rodent Restoration, we’ve developed our own eco-friendly Rodent Prevention System that relies on natural ingredients and scents to keep creatures away for up to 5 years. However, we’re well aware that the prevention system alone isn’t enough – proper removal and restoration are just as essential.
